Group Bio:

Inka Wayra began in 1997 in San Antonio, Texas.  Some of it's members' humble beginnings were as musicians at Rivercenter Mall - then they made the move to form a new group.  Andres Alvarez is the director, and it was his vision that made this group possible.  He found other gentlemen who would share this dream of traveling the country spreading the South American culture through music.

After eleven years - Inka Wayra continues to established itself as a respected, professional musical group known to many venues across the country.  The music is of the highest quality and the there is much pride in our performances as we absolutely love bringing a little bit of South America to the United States.

The Andean Instruments:

The Instruments that we play date back thousands of years to the ancient Inca empire.  Only the guitar, which was introduced by the Spanish when they conquered South America, is relatively new to the Andean musicians (if you want to call almost 500 years "new").

From the guitar, came the charrango (little guitar). The mountain people of Andes struggled with the guitar as they climbed steep slopes to their villages and homes - so they invented a smaller version of the guitar, which was much easier to manage.
